Difference between Christian and Secular Counseling

North Central’s religious belief is that truly effective counseling must recognize and involve the soul. In secular terms, North Central believes that the word “psychology” no longer speaks of studying the soul. Instead it describes a diverse menagerie of therapies and theories that are fundamentally humanistic. We believe that the presuppositions and most of the doctrine of secular psychology cannot be successfully integrated with Christian truth and religious doctrine. We believe that true psychology (i.e. “the study of the soul”) – as opposed to secular psychology – can be done only by ordained Ministers/Christian Counselors, since only ordained Ministers/Christian Counselors have the resources for understanding and transforming the soul in accordance to the Holy Scriptures and experience. The secular discipline of psychology is based on godless assumptions and evolutionary foundations that are in conflict with Christianity, and as such, North Central believes that “secular psychology” is capable of dealing with people only superficially and only on the temporal level. – Adapted by NCTS from John MacArthur’s Essay The Psychology Epidemic and its cure. With excerpts from Richard Ganz.

Statement of Faith

North Central Theological Seminary believes the Bible to be the inspired, the only infallible, authoritative Word of God. We believe that there is one God, eternally existent in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. We believe in the deity of our Lord Jesus Christ, in His virgin birth, in His sinless life, in His miracles, in His vicarious and atoning death through His shed blood, in His bodily resurrection, in His ascension to the right hand of the Father, and in His personal return in power and glory. We believe that for the salvation of lost and sinful people, regeneration by the Holy Spirit is absolutely essential. We believe in the present ministry of the Holy Spirit by whose indwelling the Christian is enabled to live a Godly life. We believe in the resurrection of both the saved and the lost; they who are saved unto the resurrection of life and they who are lost unto the resurrection of damnation. We believe in the spiritual unity of believers in our Lord Jesus Christ.
